It was very exciting for the specators. Damjan could not see Sam coming up behind him at this point. Both world record holders were pedaling very hard!

Thomas injured his ankle two weeks previous to the race in Tilburg world championships during a crash into a pole. Amazingly, he came to Michigan and raced still doing 74.296 km in the one hour, faster than even his countryman's Theo Boss UCI world 200 meter record of 73.68 kph for 9.772 seconds. Thomas was helped to a chair by Hans Wessels after his one hour run, while Barbara Buatois was finishing her 2nd record one hour run.

87 grams for both sides - 406 wheel cover, L- cutout is for Valve opening, this will be integrated into the slot on future models. The opening does not have to extend down to the rim, as the pump can't get down that far anyway. Leaving some material near the rim, woulc stiffen the disk.

This portion is next to the rim. It acts as a seal against moisture getting at cardboard. Its is also flimsy enough to bend itself backwards and seat against the aero rim section, when the main disk is pulled tight against the spokes. A harder edge might have a gap in places which would let air under the disk

A trick I used to mark the seam overlap was to shine a light through the cover. Then I traced out the overlaping seam edge on the inside of the disk. I could trace the other boundary on the outside as well. See next pictures of inside edge

A compass that traces two concentric circles - one for the hub cutout and the other for the disk edge. A nail serves as the centerpoint. I had to double its thickness in the areas where the pencils passed through in order to hold them steady. The holes drilled through the pine board are 5/16" which is about the diameter of a pencil. I have multiple holes in this compass for 406, 451, 650, hub, chainring cover etc.

Taped disk only to the six spokes that are attached to the outside of the hub on each side. Notice this is every 3rd spoke on this 24-spoke, paired spoke 451 Velocity rim. There are 12 spokes on each side, but only six of them are on the outside of the hub. These are the spokes that are further out from the hub center, hence they will make first contact with the disk.

new black cardboard disk (so it looks like carbon!) with a L-shaped valve access door. I have yet to seal this in laminate. I will cut the laminate down the middle of the L. It will swing open to allow me to put a pump in there. I guess that I only need to put a door on one side. I made it 5 inches tall to accomodate the largest pump head - which requires the lever to be flipped up when sealing it on the valve stem.

Posterboard stops about 3/4" short of the braking surface. It may be hard to see the clear see through laminate in this photo, but it is running right up next to the braking surface. This last 3/4" perimeter of laminate only makes for a watertight seal on the cardboard, and makes an edge that is a bit more flexible to conform and seal against the aero section of the rim.

Laminate machine at Kinkos Copy Centers. Price was cheap to laminate the posterboard disks. This type of machine uses the "soft" laminate. Some book or report covers may use the "hard" laminate which is thicker, but only comes in typically 8.5 x 11 size. The soft laminate is all you need.

The little marks outside the hub cutout allow me to find the exact center of the hole later. This is important. After the whole disk is sealed in laminate, I want to put my compass at the center again and trace out a circle about 1/2 inch beyond the edge of the paper. This is where I'll cut the laminate off at.

Tracing out the shape using my homemade tool - which was based off the measurements I took earlier of the rim and dish. I sat the posterboard on a piece of cardboard, so I could stab through the posterboard into the cardboard to hold my homemade compass steady as I traced the circles.

Visitor badges were printed up with participant's names and teams. C. Michael Lewis created the artwork and layup for the badges. Each badge had names individually typed on them by Mike Mowett and Ford personnel. They were used to gain entry to the track. Over 150 in all were printed up before people arrived.

Excellent 200 meter Trap near end (east end) of North Straightaway. We could finish the 1/4 mile drags and Kilometer Straight line sprints in this location. The track passes through a valley which should provide some wind shelter. Winds out of the west will be at riders backs.
